From transformation to acceleration

The events that have unfurled since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic have shown businesses how vital it is to be digital. Critically, a digital business is a data-driven one. Its successes depend on all employees being able to process data and make subsequent decisions that enable their organizations to adapt with pace and intelligence.

Business leaders must develop an operation that prioritizes unobstructed access to data for employees, as well as the tools and competencies to analyze and act on the insights this yields.

This data-driven approach will ensure organizations are adaptable, enabling them to respond and grow in the face of both anticipated challenges and unanticipated shocks – whether internal or external.

In this new era of sustainable business models, digital transformation is a given. What businesses need is digital acceleration, with data-driven decision-making support at its core.

Can you keep up?

Business leaders are under immense pressure to ensure their people, processes, tools and systems are fit for purpose as the workforce shifts to hybrid working, supply chains endure uncertainty, and products and services rapidly evolve.

To address these challenges, organizations must start showing how they will deliver insights from data.

“There is real business value in being a data-driven organization,” says Frederik De Breuck, Chief Digital Officer and Chief Technology Officer of Fujitsu Belgium. "The true value of data sits in explaining the insights it offers, and how that can be used to improve operational performance, agility and resilience."

It is the knowledge and insight drawn from correctly structured data that can support the more complex decision-making models that have now emerged.

Data use has accelerated, and businesses are dependent on their digital teams to keep up.

“Data is part of the engine that allows companies to know faster, act faster, do better, and learn from the things that are happening, as they are happening, to enable a more adaptive organization.”

A real opportunity for digital leaders

Digital leaders – the chief data officers, chief digital officers, chief information officers and chief technology officers of an organization – now have a real opportunity.

For Márcio Gonçalves Cesário, General Manager, Business Strategy, Data & AI at Microsoft, tapping into this opportunity requires digital leaders to focus on two key areas: technical capabilities and culture.

The former involves successful use of the tools needed to derive insights from the vast volumes of data surrounding organizations, whether from legacy systems or modernized business applications.

“It is important to be able to do all of that while ensuring enterprise requirements such as security, privacy and governance are addressed in a simple and consistent way across the entire data estate,” says Cesário.

The latter area of focus involves making sure organizations develop a “data-driven” value at all levels. As Cesário notes, a data-driven culture involves “both mindset and skillset,” so that those “who want to leverage data and care about its quality and sharing also have the proper training and capabilities to do so.”

Those that are proactive are more likely to create opportunity out of any challenges that emerge. So, can leaders ensure their organizations are truly data-driven in time for this digital acceleration?

What we learned: Accelerate now

Most businesses understand the importance of data strategy

of businesses abandoned, revised or updated existing data strategies, or developed a new data strategy in 2020 (2% had no strategy at all)

Data accessibility is mission-critical

of digital leaders say their firms failed to meet targets over the last year as a direct result of limited access to data

Data drives productivity at all levels

of firms with self-service data access report being much more productive since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic

Compared with just

of firms with data silos

Future performance depends on investment today

of all leaders say that lack of investment in new tools and capabilities for harnessing data remotely will have a negative impact on business performance in the year ahead

Three data accelerators

Businesses need to speed up their data use – the research makes that clear. But to support a digital business strategy they must become data-driven from the bottom up.

How do they do that? With three accelerators:
